MIKA AUDIO

ROLE: DESIGN CONSULTANT

MIKA Audio is a consumer audio company based in Toronto that focuses on unique Bluetooth speakers.

Drawing inspiration from vintage guitar amplifiers, the design intent of this project was to develop a portable boombox with integrated instrument (or microphone) input to serve as both a music player and a PA system. The objective was to produce a product with modern features and functionality wrapped up in a unique, vintage aesthetic.

This project involved the comprehensive design of MIKA Audio’s portable speaker system. Starting with a high level concept, I lead the MIKA team through the design process focusing on functionality and aesthetic, and outlined tangible goals including audio fidelity, durability, ease of assembly, and cost of manufacturing.

With the design clearly outlined, I lead the team through the prototyping process – refining audio performance through objective measurement, developing manufacturing and supply chain relationships, and documenting technical drawings for assembly.

After numerous prototypes and extensive testing, the MIKA Speaker boasted a significant increase in volume and frequency response. These increases in fidelity were due to increased rigidity from internal bracing, air-tight construction and tight tolerances from the use of a CNC router to produce parts, and carefully chosen components to create a cohesive system. Furthermore, the cabinet was ported to enable lower resonant frequencies for better bass response.
